P.E. Focus of the Month: Flexibility- The quality of bending easily without breaking; The ability to be easily modified; willingness to change or compromise.
Week 5 In May we will be focusing on Heart Health! We are teaming up with The American Heart Association to do a Kids Heart Challenge virtual kick off WEDNESDAY April 29th @ 11:00 am and 2:00pm (during our regularly scheduled P.E. zoom) I will be emailing more information about this next week. I encourage you to take the 10 day challenge with me! The question we will be asking this week, is, "How can we keep our heart healthy?" What we can DO with our bodies... Exercise and physical fitness are the key components to keeping our heart healthy. In 1 minute, your heart pumps 1.5 gallons of blood. That blood travels through 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Your heart is a machine! It is a coordinated muscle that pumps blood into your lungs and back through your entire body. Let's give it up for our hearts, it works tirelessly for you day in and day out. Working on our cardiovascular fitness is so important so let's give our hearts a workout this week! DAY 1 Wednesday April 29th Day 2: Thursday, April 30th Day 3: Friday, May 1st What we PUT INTO our bodies... We are what we eat! Let us be mindful over the next week to think about what food we put in our bodies. -Identify the foods you like to eat in each food group category: kids-food-groups-chart-easy-printable-guide.pdf -Draw what you think would be a yummy and nutritious meal: kids-healthy-dinner-fun-nutrition-worksheet-draw-activity.pdf -Serving sizes are important! Take a look at this chart and compare a serving size to what is on your plate: kids-food-servings-food-groups-servings-pictures-kids-printable-guidelines-food-portions.pdf What we FEEL emotionally with our bodies... (happiness, sadness, stress, etc.) Take time this week to find ways to relax and laugh! Laughter can have some great effects. It can:
Stimulate many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.
Activate and relieve your stress response. A rollicking laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response, and it can increase and then decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. The result? A good, relaxed feeling.
Soothe tension. Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.
Improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. By contrast, positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses.
Relieve pain. Laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers.
Increase personal satisfaction. Laughter can also make it easier to cope with difficult situations. It also helps you connect with other people.
Improve your mood. Many people experience depression, sometimes due to chronic illnesses. Laughter can help lessen your depression and anxiety and may make you feel happier.
